The County Durham area of Raby is dominated by Raby Castle which was built around 1367 by the Third Baron Neville de Raby. The Castle has, at various times, been owned by the Earl of Darlington, the Duke of Cleveland and Sir Henry Vane the Elder. The area enjoyed fox hunting, although the Raby Hunt later diversified to organise its own race meetings, beginning on Tuesday 23rd April 1844. The 2 race card featured the Raby Hunt Sweepstake over 3 miles which was won by Mr Mewburn’s Clementina, triumphing over a field of nine. The winner’s prize was to donate eight bottles of fine wine to the dinner in the evening, and a further bottle to the judge. The concluding Sweepstake went to Mr Hodgson’s Dandy, and he also had to donate 4 bottles of wine. The final meeting organised by the Hunt Committee under rules was on Friday 27th March 1846.
